In 1999 Ashot Khachatryan became a co-founder, and later chief editor of the newspaper "Artist of Petersburg".

In 2005, assembling a collection of paintings by leading contemporary artists of our city, with the aim of reviving the cultural ties between Russia and Armenia, initiated the transmission of these works in the gift to the National gallery of Armenia. This action fits very well within the program "Days of St. Petersburg in Armenia". Donation ceremony on behalf of the Union of artists of St. Petersburg and the authors was held at the National gallery in Yerevan - head of the delegation of St. Petersburg Governor V. I. Matvienko in the presence of the mayor of the city Museum presented more than thirty works.

There are different artists. Some speak vividly in his work on the new experiences and with a passion to write and draw different cities and countries where they had a chance to visit or live. Others are loyal to one theme, a world where flowed their childhood and adolescence, where they first felt his calling as an artist. This Is Ashot Khachatryan.

In St. Petersburg, which is connected with the whole of his creative life, he remains a genuinely Armenian artist, deeply national in Outlook and style.

Born Ashot Khachatryan in 1954 in the city of Oktemberyan, Armavir, now, in the past, one of the capitals of ancient Armenia, and now a modest provincial town in the Ararat valley. He grew up in a large family of his grandfather in Sardarabad, a place sanctified by the memory of the heroic events of the Armenian history. Patriarchal life, which invariably used the items served many generations - a simple, but lovingly made utensils, colorful carpets ( rugs ) with God - fifth ornament from childhood, formed the taste and preferences of the future artist.

The father says Ashot, were constantly making and inspire the children that all that they undertake must be done carefully and well. Ashot remember that for the representation. But the main thing - he in the childhood was filled with a sense of the value of traditional folk culture, further nourished his creativity persistent, although not always explicitly manifested archetypes.

His very first tentative experiences in the graphic refer to school years. Then in 1971, he enrolled in the Yerevan school of decorative art in the glass Department. Painting the school was taught by Akop, ananikian, interesting and peculiar artist. Communication with him had to Ashot almost more value than the one obtained here, professional skills, ability to appreciate the plastic quality and features. But especially important was the acquaintance with the artistic life of the Armenian capital, at that time a very intense, rich manifold of different and very daring quests. Remained unshakable authority of Martiros Saryan is the head of the national school. In the heyday of his bright talent was Minas Avetisyan. Raznoobrazno and interesting artists worked returnees, especially Hakob Hakobyan. In a kaleidoscope of artistic impressions Ashot, maybe even unconsciously, have chosen their own creative guidelines - the paintings of Saryan and Minas.

After graduating from College and served in the army, he enrolled in the Yerevan pedagogical Institute. But soon, on the advice of the sculptor L. Chubaryan, obviously not seen in PC - van of prospects for professional development, went to St. Petersburg (Leningrad) to continue his education at the Academy of arts ( Institute. I. E. Repin ). Thus, since 1977, the fate of Ashot was connected with our city. Not stepping into the Academy, he spent four years visited her as a volunteer, working in the workshops of B. S. Ugarov, Yu. M. Neprintsev, engaged in drawing under the guidance of p. P. Belousov in the workshop of E. E. Moiseenko. One of the best teachers of the Academy V. G. Roll, right after evaluation of the possibilities of the young artist, advised him not to copy what others do, and to write freely, developing their individuality. This advice is in large measure determined his future career.

In St. Petersburg Ashot was dominated by new experiences. First of all, the Museum - tions. In the Hermitage it was most of all struck by the work of Gauguin and van Gogh, in the Russian Museum V. A. Serov and Vrubel. In addition, numerous exhibitions of old and new art, gradually priotkryvaya before the forbidden values. All of this is extremely dis - Cirilo horizons of the artist, but did not affect the underlying national basis of his art.

In this sense, is typical of the genre priorities are creativity Ashot: portrait, still life and especially landscape. But perhaps most of all - a specifically national sense of color - an open, loud, sometimes dazzling in its brightness. It is the color - the most important expressive means of the artist that determines the compositional organization and the expression of his works. Even in cases where it dampens the sound, color, rich in variety of shades and modulations, maintains its determination laydee meaningful value in the image structure of his paintings.

Colorful palette is already apparent in his early works ("still life with bananas" 1981). But fully his inherent sense of colour, its density, rich - ness of its decorative qualities revealed in later paintings and floral still lifes, filled with fascinating vital energy, and still lifes with fruit. Ashot likes to write fruit alwayshas the juice of life - peaches and especially grenades. He often matches with a red background, and the diversity of its hues like bright absorbs moisture exuded by the sliced fruit. Often it is a sense of color becomes a stimulus for the creative imagination of the artist, for example - in such works as "the Red summer" ( 1990 ) or "the World in red tones" ( 1996 ), based entirely on the interaction of the shades of red. A completely self - expression, free from the dictates of the form, the color becomes in the film "the Joy" ( 1999 ).

In his portraits Ashot usually also looking for specific color dominant, designed to Express adequately shaped plan. He often paints self-portraits, different in emotional tone from a busy drama and color rigor of the early "self-Portrait with a white bandage" ( 1979 ) to brutal, catchy color "self-Portrait with palette" ( 1997), or filled with internal centered - ness "self-Portrait" in 2001. Among the indisputable successes in this genre belongs a portrait of Levon Lazarev ( 1995 ), decided on the contrast between the light shapes and ornamental - tion of the background, which makes the traits of Oriental decoration, did not diminish - which is purely a portrait of values.

But the main theme in the artist's work is invariably Armenia. It appears in his canvases their characteristic elements - mountains, houses, trees, Alice - VariAudio natural and human principle, seen in indissoluble unity. He writes and lonely mud hut with a flat roof, and is closely welded to each other "growing" upwards and outwards plastically clear buildings and temples are metaphors for people - sky community. In color they are close to the mountains, for they are created from the same dense substan - tion, and rocky slopes of Armenia. Most often landscapes of Ashot devoid of any specific topographical signs. Only in rare work depicts the famous Armenian monuments, such as "Geghard Monastery" (1993).But in this case the artist does not seek literal accuracy, it creates a synthetic image of the famous monument. As actually synthetic and the image of Armenia in all his works, despite the fact that they are saturated with the truth of the living feelings, observations, experiences.

Ashot says Armenia and in the freshness of spring flowering ( "Spring" 1991 - 1992 ), and in the torrid days of summer ( "Noon" 1994 ), when the land and house seem to radiate a heat of the southern sun. But most often in autumn when the trees are lit Golden and reddish - mi shades, or have lost their leaves, seem equally unprotected from the cold and wind, and people.

All these landscapes painted from memory, stores all the most characteristic and close to the attitude of the artist in the guise of his native country. The plan of his paintings he captures in a small compositional sketches or fugitive oil sketches, in which nameche; basic color relationships. In the completed pictures he summarizes his memories and observations in a collective image of Armenia as a rule, devoid of any stressed modern take. Not accidentally one of the artist's works called "From time immemorial" ( 1994 ). It, like many songs of Ashot, can be called a kind of continuation of different architectural imagination, in this case, not without some teatralno years.

A world recreated in the paintings by Ashot, simultaneously imaginary and real, a spiritualized human presence. Life, the current for the blank walls of houses are usually slow and inconspicuous. In rare cases, it acquires a certain Shu - budgetary expression ( "Sacrifice" 1996 ). Most often this life embody pensive female figures, appearing in doorways, wandering along the houses, frozen in silent waiting or immersed in conversation. Sometimes it seems that they exist in some timeless space that the Patriarchal houses and ancient mountains. That's right - in her native eternal existence, seen and poetically recreated Armenia Ashot Khachatryan.

Individual works of an artist over the last twenty years has shown at many group exhibitions of St. Petersburg. His paintings have been shown abroad - in Germany, France, USA.
