Born in the city of Yelets in Oryol province. After training in art-industrial technical school of Leningrad has entered the all-Russian Academy of arts. Studied with V. I. Shukhaev, R. R. Frentz, N. Uh. Radlov, in the workshop of one of the greatest teachers–realists D. N. Kardovsky. Classes led by great artists-painters Petrov was given great training and understanding of the need for constant self-improvement. In 1939, hardly had time to imagine the State Commission of the painting "the Meeting with Pushkin Kuhelbeker" (now located in the Ministry of culture of the Russian Federation), the artist was called up for active service in the Red Army, was the Great Patriotic war. After demobilization, Sergey has returned to work and at the same time began teaching at the Higher art and industrial school im. V. I. Mukhina. More than twenty years he headed the Department of drawing, has prepared a brilliant constellation of artists that perform at the largest exhibitions in the country and abroad.
