The son of a blacksmith from Durbe. Wilkes soon learned the bitterness and the joy of work. The future artist worked and simultaneously studied at the architectural Department of the University where under the guidance of eminent painter Wilhelm Purvit studied various disciplines of art.

In the mid-thirties Geert Wilkes began to write of the scenery in the various theatres of Riga, and in 1937 he independently performed his first scenery, working in a Small ensemble Art theatre.

In 1946 Wilkes illustrated his first book - folk song "Threw on the shoulders of a white handkerchief".

In 1947 became the main decorator of the Art theatre.

Wilkes works in the field of interior design of hotels, resorts. Metro station "Riga" in Moscow - the decoration of Wilkes. Girts Vilks is a Latvian author of the stained glass "Red Latvian Riflemen".
