Born 8 Oct 1877 in Tambov. After the initial art education in Saratov in 1897 he entered the Moscow school of painting, sculpture and architecture, from which he graduated in 1907. Studied under Levitan, Korovin, Serov. After the revolution he taught at the Drawing school named A. P. Bogolyubov in Saratov, at the Institute of painting, sculpture and architecture the Russian Academy of arts.

P. S. Utkin was born in the family of the railway. In Saratov Studio of the Society of fine arts, and then in the Bogolyubov drawing school (hereinafter the school), he began his artistic education.

In 1897 he entered the MUZHVZ, where he studied until 1907 at I. I. Levitan, V. Serov, Korovin. Together with his friend, countryman and fellow in the College P. V. Kuznetsov, Utkin was not only a participant but also an organizer of the exhibition "scarlet rose" (1904, Saratov) and "Blue rose" (1907, Moscow). These expositions were an important stage in the history of Russian symbolism.

Dreaminess and musicality of painting "goluborozovtsev" was characteristic of the paintings Utkin and their specific names "Sleep", "Mirage" etc. Its fantastic landscapes, often designed in the most popular of the symbolist blue-lilac tones, whimsical painting, reminiscent of frost patterns on glass ("Mimosa", the 1900s), the artist created a reputation as the most consistent symbolist.

Decorative graphics Utkin graced the pages of the magazine "Golden fleece", he was engaged in book illustration, in particular, has issued a book of A. Bely "the Silver dove" (1910). It Utkin, together with P. Kuznetsov and sculptor Matveev, invited Y. Zhukovsky for the decoration of his estate in the Crimea. Utkin held in New Kucuk Something 1909-14., working on the paintings of villas and romantic landscapes of Crimea. In 1918, the artist settled in Saratov, he taught at the Drawing school.
