Jules de Breaker. Universal draftsman

Exhibition October 23, 2020 − January 23, 2021

Ghent Museum of Fine Arts organizes an exhibition“Jules de Breaker. Universal Draftsman ».

The exposition is dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the museum and is dedicated to the work of Jules de Breaker (1870-1945), a bright, expressive and contemplative artist. Visitors will see more than 150 works by the author, including paintings, graphics, drawings, watercolors, gouaches from the museum’s collection and private collections.

Jules de Breaker became famous not only as a universal artist, mastering all the techniques - from painting and engraving to elegant pencil sketch. The author is a virtuoso master of irony and “easy mockery”, a skilled observer of social phenomena and vices, wielding a keen look both at others and at himself. De Breaker draws the viewer into the uncontrollability of fun festivities and parades, but at the same time he encounters other people who live on the outskirts of society, with their hopelessness and lower instincts. The phantasmagoric drawings and engravings made by the author during the First World War show how he condemns the madness and human suffering.
