Nicholas Maes: Master of the Golden Age of Dutch Painting

Exhibition July 18 − September 20, 2020
National Gallery of London hosts an exhibition "Nicholas Maes: Master of the Golden Age of Dutch Painting".

The exhibition includes more than 50 paintings and drawings by one of the most talented students of Rembrandt van Rijn.

Maes was not only a talented painter, but also an astute businessman and created over 900 portraits, adapting his style to reflect the haute couture and decoration of the second half of the 17th century. But it is his “genre” scenes, in which the central character often “overhears and breaks the fourth wall” to interact directly with the viewer, that best reveal Maes' inventive and distinctive style. The exhibition - the first in the UK dedicated to Maes - shows the path to artist fame.
