Barnes Foundation presents exhibition
"Suzanne Valadon: Model, Artist, Rebel".
The artist's first major exhibition in the United States showcases Valadon's rich contribution to the art world of the early 20th century, exploring her creative journey as well as business strategies for promoting her artwork.
From a childhood marked by poverty to a career as a model for a popular artist, Suzanne Valadon (née Marie-Clementine Valadon, 1865-1938) expressed disdain for conservatism, aspired to become a successful artist, and defied the expectations of society to assert her independence. The first self-taught woman to present herself at the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, she challenged behavioural codes with her art and lifestyle, breaking new ground with her intransigent portraits and nude bodies.
