From 1935 he studied at the painting faculty of the Moscow Institute of fine arts, graduating with honors. His teachers were the famous masters of fine arts: S. V. Gerasimov, I. E. Grabar, G. M. Segal, V. V. Pochitalov. Memories of the years of study devoted to the paintings "MY TEACHERS SHEGAL G. M. and V. V. POCHITALOV" (1964) and "ie GRABAR and SV. GERASIMOV AT GOATS" (1969). In the 1960s, has developed individual and unique style of the artist, which would be typical for his works and subsequently. At the same time, finally determined the circle of his subjects, although Birshtein didn't prefer any one genre: he is equally inspired, worked on landscape, still life and portrait. The artist wrote the simplest things: a dog with puppies ("DIGA!", 1968), his collection bought on the market kitsch cats-piggy banks ("still life WITH CATS", 1979), rural domestic scene ("FORGING the OX IN ZESTAFONI", 1979), but it tends to bring them out of the world of everyday life. Interesting landscapes painted under the impression from many visits over a number of years in Central Asia and Transcaucasia - "TWILIGHT. SAMARKAND" (1964), "THE SOURCE. FROM A PLANE TREE. ORDUBAD" (1967), "NIGHT IN BAKU" (1980); "STORM IN BAKU" (1982).

The pictorial space of his works is based on the contrast of the massive architecture and impressionist light and air, the openness of color, the nobility of a refined palette created a restrained tonal richness of the landscapes. 1970-1980s, noted in the work of Birshtein compositional discoveries — still life or landscape are included as important elements in a portrait or a genre picture. In the work "MEMORIES OF VENICE" (1981) a background for a still life made up of Italian Souvenirs, is the landscape of Venice, standing on an easel.

Portrait played a significant role in the artist's works of recent decades. Birshtein was often depicted on his canvases the creative people, colleagues, close friends. In the late 1960s he began to create the so-called "portraits-paintings", paintings-memories: "A. A. OSMERKIN WORKSHOP P. P. FALK" (1967), "ARTISTS of A. A. DEINEKA and G. of NYSSA" (1979).

In some works, such as "the ARTIST IRINA MAKAROVA" (1981), "the SCULPTOR MILA KREMNEV. MIRROR" (1980), "the SCULPTOR VLADIMIR TSIGAL" (1980), "ARTIST HELEN KACHELAEVA" (1983), still life is a composition as an important explanatory component. The hero of the picture depicted in the background of his own works, which helps the erection of his image. The people in the paintings Birstein like yourself tell us about yourself by taking part in the creation of your portrait. Painter T. E. Nazarenko, posed for the artist on the background of his painting "Wedding in Bukhara", and N.And. Nesterov is at the moment working on the painting "the Georgian feast". Even when imagery paintings have Birstein dramatic as the portraits of V. E. Tatlin, V. E. Popkov, there is the universal significance of the creative personality.

Shaped the world pleases and attracts. Whole life Birshtein was filled with interesting trips, meetings with remarkable men. Travel North on New Earth, in Singapore, Africa has enriched his work with bright impressions. Due to this, there was a range of themes and subjects, which are characteristic of the artist. Every motive, whether of landscape or human figure — Birshtein recognizes the right to be the starting point of creative inspiration. His personal exhibitions were held in Moscow (1984,1992), Leningrad (1985), Obninsk, Yalta, Voronezh, Yerevan, and Tbilisi. He became a participant of many exhibitions in the country and abroad.
