Rembrandt's engravings at the Morgan Library and Museum

The Morgan Library and Museum uploaded hundreds of Rembrandt’s engravings and made them publicly available. Among the reproductions of the genius artist’s works in high resolution, there are etchings previously unknown to wide audience, not mentioning an impressive gallery of self-portraits by Rembrandt van Rijn. It’s a real luxury gift to art admirers.

Scanned prints by the great Dutchman are available on The Morgan Library and Museum website as part of its storerooms' comprehensive opening to public access.

Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam digitized and uploaded a unique collection of French prints from the fin de siècle (1890−1905), provided with invaluable data on its website. The museum owns a unique collection of French prints, engravings, posters and books. However, more than 1800 exhibits are not available for permanent display due to their large sizes and extreme photosensitivity. Now, Internet users are able to look through them at their leisure, using cross-references offered by the website.

In fact, collection is really amazing! There are interesting works, not widely known to the audience, stylish design, variety of stories, techniques and names! From Toulouse-Lautrec, Gaugin, Signac, Bernard to Steinlen, an author of the famous posters.

Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam

Rijksmuseum digitized 125 exhibits in 2012 and made them available online on its website. Within Rijksstudio program, users can discover the possibilities of the masterpieces: view them in details and read about their history. Anyone can make his/her own online gallery, download any art work he/she likes and use it at his/her own discretion. For example, one can make a reproduction by himself/herself and even use images to take part in Rijksstudio Award competition with a prize of 10 thousand euros.

To get an access to the digital archives, one should create a free account on the museum website.

The Leiden Collection – the largest and most important collection of seventeenth-century Dutch art in private hands

The largest private collector of Rembrandt and Old Dutch and Flemish Masters has uploaded its digital collection online. The Leiden Collection named after Rembrandt’s native city, consists of more than 250 paintings and drawings, including 175 that formed its electronic catalogue.

Nationalmuseum in Sweden

Nationalmuseum in Sweden uploaded some 3000 paintings in high resolution. We’ve got here some world-famous paintings as Renoir’s La Grenouillère (The Frog Pond) and many other splendid works not frequently seen by internet audience. Images in high resolution are available on Wikimedia Commons. Scalable images will also be added to the museum’s online database.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The Met grants free access to 375 thousand images (we give you ready-made links to navigate among sections). From now on you can download images to your computer and use them for research or commercial purposes. Each photograph is 4K resolution (four thousand pixels) so that users can zoom into and out the masterpieces and view them in tiniest detail.

The Whitney Museum of American Art

The collection of the Whitney Museum of American Art, located in New York City, houses over 23 thousand art works created by more than 3000 artists during the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Almost all of them are already available online.

Тhe Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)

A large part of MoMA’s collection is currently available online. Тhe Museum of Modern Art in New York hosts almost 200 thousand works by 10,000 artists. Not all exhibits are displayed for public view but you can see many of them in detail online, up to the tiniest сraquelure, as in The Persistence of Memory by Salvador Dali.

A book about friendship and collaboration between Rubens and Brueghel

Peter Paul Rubens and Jan Brueghel the Elder were the two most famous artists in Antwerp at the beginning of the seventeenth century. They were close friends and frequent collaborators. They executed approximately two dozen works together over the course of twenty-five years, from about 1598 to 1625. The J. Paul Getty Trust published a book Rubens and Brueghel: A Working Friendship. You can download it in public domain.

Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum

Featuring over 1,700 artworks by more than 625 artists, the online collection of Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum presents a searchable database of selected artworks from the Guggenheim’s permanent collection of more than 7 thousand artworks. The selection reflects the museum’s extensive holdings from the late 19th century through the present day.

The Collection Online is being continually expanded. In addition to artworks from the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, it includes works from the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice, and the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao.

Additionally, The Guggenheim Museum shared over 200 free art books through the Internet Archive. You can view or read them online or downloaded in PDF or ePub formats. First appeared online in 2012, the library has grown to include over 200 titles of modern and historic art books, including the rare and out-of-print titles about Pablo Picasso, Roy Lichtenstein, Paul Klee, Jenny Holzer, Joseph Cornell, as well as several exhibition catalogues and books about the museum itself. There are also publications on wide ranging topics from the Russian and Soviet avant-garde

The National Galleries of Scotland

The National Galleries of Scotland reconstructed their website and presented an online collection highlighting their masterpieces from over 96 thousand objects in its permanent collection. In such a way the institution joined an illustrious list of world’s leading museums that open their collections to public view. The online collection includes the masterpieces by the renowned artists, such as Botticelli, Titian, Turner, Matisse, Gaugin, Degas, Van Gogh, Magritte, and many others.

The Barnes Collection

The Barnes Collection is home to one of the world’s greatest collections of Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, and modern European paintings, with numerous holdings of Renoir, Cézanne, Matisse, and Picasso. Assembled by Dr. Albert C. The Barnes Online Collection made digital images of more than 2 thousand works of art in the Barnes Foundation’s collection available to the public. Its design was inspired by Dr. Barnes and his approach to looking at art.
