Biography and information

Member of the Academy of arts of the USSR. People's artist of the USSR. Honorary member of the Academy of arts of the GDR. One of the founders of the art of socialist realism. He studied in the Studio of P. kälin (1912-1913).

He graduated from the Moscow school of painting at the Studio of K. Korovin (1918).

Since 1914 – an active participant of exhibitions. Author of paintings on historical-revolutionary and domestic themes, portraits and illustrations to the works of Soviet writers. Laureate of USSR state prize (1941, 1951).

In 1937, for the painting "the Interrogation of Communists" (1933), was awarded the "Grand Prix" of the International exhibition in Prizes 1951 to 1954 Director of the state Tretyakov gallery. From 1958 to 1962 – President of the USSR Academy of Arts. In 1958, for the painting "On the old Ural plant" was awarded a gold medal at the world exhibition in Brussels. The work of B. V. Ioganson was exhibited at the international exhibitions in Cologne (1929), London (1932, 1961, 1975), new York (1936), Venice (1956), Paris (1961), Berlin (1963), Rome (1974), and others. Personal exhibition was held in 1969 in Moscow. His works are in the Tretyakov gallery, the Russian Museum, in many museums of the former USSR.

He studied at the Moscow school of painting, sculpture and architecture (1912-18).. Kasatkina, S. V. Malyutin and K. A. Korovin.

Taught at the Leningrad Institute of painting, sculpture and architecture. I. E. Repin (1937-1961, Professor from 1939), the Moscow art Institute. V. I. Surikov (1964).

In 1953-58 Vice President, 1958-62 President of the Academy of the USSR. The first Secretary of the Union of artists of the USSR (1965-68).

A member of AHRR (1922-31).

Since 1962, the chief editor of the encyclopedia "Art of the countries and peoples of the world."

In his work, Johansson develops the traditions of Russian realistic painting of the 2nd half of the 19th century It is clear in composition and vibrant in color genre paintings of the late 20-ies of differing inherent in painting AHRR thoroughness of the story and the specific social characteristics of the characters, convey the difficult everyday life of the Soviet country, the features of the new Soviet reality ["the Soviet court", Tretyakov gallery "Rabfak goes" ("Universitarians"), the Kiev Museum of Russian art, both 1928].

In 30-ies I. appeals to the historical-revolutionary theme ["Interrogation of Communists", 1933, "On the old Ural plant" ("Ural Demidov"), 1937, USSR State prize, 1941, - both works are in the Tretyakov gallery]. In these pictures Johansson, by personalizing the opposing class forces, pushing them into dramatic conflict, is committed to genuine historicism contents and embodiment of heroic pathos of the revolutionary struggle; a carefully designed composition based on specific comparisons of characters belonging to different camps, and emotional painting style marked by richness of colors and coloristic unity, subordinated to the task of the psychological characteristics of the courage of the Communists.

In 1950, I. and co-authors wrote the painting "Speech VI Lenin at the 3rd Congress of the Komsomol" (Tretyakov gallery; State prize of the USSR, 1951).

Delegate, 22nd and 23rd congresses of the CPSU.

Awarded 3 orders of Lenin, the order "badge of Honor" and medals.
